Exhaust install

Santa flew in from England a little early this year. My wife asked what was wrong with my current stock exhaust, umm nothing. What is special about this one? Bigger pipes, better flow, more power! Basically a xmas gift to myself. Below is a dry fit of the pieces, and a close up of one of the tips. As you can see a nice bit of craftsmanship.

I first picked up the car and set it on four jack stands. I did  not notice until I was under the car but one of the stands was not even touching the car- the MINI is very stiff. This is a 2010 MINI Clubman S, or R55. The exhaust is a Milltek I picked up from Way at Way Motor Works . He is always very helpful with suggestions on replacement and repair of this vehicle. I pulled off the old system without much trouble. What wore me out the most was undoing the rubber hangers. I took the rears off by first removing the brackets from the car body to get better leverage. Once the rubber was off the old muffler hanger I put the clamps back on but did not tighten them, although I could have it would not have made much of a difference. There is a center bracket that needed to come out, I added WD-40 to everything first, the rubber especially.

Getting the exhaust in place did not take long at all. I kept everything loose while I jostled everything as best I could. I did not add any anti-seize or sealant between the joints. I debated with myself about this for a while, it would have made a good lubricant. Perhaps I should have added anti-seize in the event of returning to the stock pipes. With my floor jack I lifted the split section tight to the bottom of the car and centered as best I could then tightened the clamps. The supplied clamps are very good. If I were to do it again I would buy a new clamp to attach to the downpipe which was not included. Fortunately mine was not too corroded.

The sound is slightly lower/deeper than stock, but not loud. They also sell and un-resonated version which is supposed to make more noise, but this IS a daily driver! I have only put a few miles on it and seems to rev more quickly and slightly improved acceleration. I will update with more data as it is generated.

Mini Clubman S fuel consumption, first 25K miles

I drive a Mini Clubman S, I love the little thing. It drives great, easy to park in the city, and I can carry passengers comfortably. The problem is getting in and out of the back for larger people. Typically I drive with one other person so usually it is not an issue.

I like to keep track of my fuel consumption data to monitor fuel efficiency, and to see if gas stations and price make that much of a difference, and I use the recommended premium fuel. There are a couple receipts that were missed or lost, for those I averaged the surrounding data and filled it in, out of 66 tanks two were filled out this way. The total fuel cost to travel those miles was ~$2856.

Premium gasoline cost per gallon and cost of driving per mile

The cost to drive my Mini Clubman one mile with the cost of premium fuel per gallon.

The fuel efficiency has not changed over the one year I have been driving the vehicle. The jumps in efficiency are when I do my annual pilgrimage to the great southwest, this is where I am from and where I love to go back and see many many loved ones, and most importantly do some hiking and get some air! The slight increase in efficiency in recent months is due to moving to the city, so there are more highway miles. Chicago highway miles should have their own category IMO.

One more chart, it highlights the increases in fuel cost as an increasing gap between the plot of monthly miles traveled,  and monthly fuel expenditure.

Coraline Trailer-directed by Henry Selick and written by Neil Gaiman

I just got an endorsement for this trailer from Neil Gaiman in the form a tweet. The writer of such wonderful things as the Sandman, the very cool Hellblazer- Hold Me issue and many many more treats. Henry Selick of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and other animated features have created an interesting world animated for our pleasure, looks cool! Have to see it when it appears (febuary 6), if it ever does in the one horse town of College Station TX. Movie choices in the place are dismal. I have found trailers to be a bit depressing, I really enjoy the big screen with surround sound load enough to make your guts tingle. Some day…

CHICAGO 10 on PBS

I am watching PBS’s Independent lens program, Chicago 10. Very nice, the story is told with animation and old footage. The events are centered on the 1968 Democratic National Convention. I voted today so I feel it is timely, but the reason for the post is the music is just great, Beasties, Rage, Black Sabbath on on.
